South Side Family Farms

Urban Food Systems Symposium Conference 2024 Tour

Welcome Urban Food Systems Symposium to South Side Family Farms!

We greatly appreciate you attending today’s tour of our South Side Urban Farm and Garden sites. We are a local community organization who focuses on combating food insecurity and building youth-oriented cultivation and education systems here on the South Side. We practice sustainable, organic, and regenerative production at all of our locations. We are a program of ICANDO Community Development Nonprofit.

The tour will begin at Pop Pop’s Learning Place, 1269 Wilson Ave. Then we will move to Pop Pop’s Production Place (pictured above), 1204 Wilson Ave. Our last stop will be Pop Pop and Nana’s Farmstand, 1007 Deshler Ave, where construction is nearly complete and we are scheduled to open in July.

Below are additional locations we are also involved with, yet will not be visiting today.

With LSS Food Pantries at 1460 Champion Ave we are cultivating a community garden and raised bed system. We are also currently initiating a new indoor growing facility at 1555 Gilbert Ave (add photo). These locations are less than 1 mile from the Farmstand and our central community education and cultivation facilities.

Most of our production occurs at our two acre rural location in Johnstown, Ohio (~40 minutes NE). Here we produce market crop fruits and vegetables, which we transport into the city to provide for our communities here in Columbus. At this location we maintain two 30 ft x 96 ft high tunnels, and a third will be coming shortly. One will be retrofitted with geothermal heating and cooling through a Warner Grant this year.

Thank you for joining us today and please inquire with us regarding any questions or comments you would like to share. Seeds sown today are the plants of progress for tomorrow!

Meet our lovely volunteers! All of their hard work has left lasting impressions invaluable by number. We welcome students of all ages to learn the importance of food security and community truly is.

Please consider contributing to our organization and/or sharing our work with others. Visit our donate page or click below to see more information on our current fundraiser.
